Once again, the hearty and devoted met at Junction Pool to celebrate another CFFCM First Cast event and officially open the annual New York State Trout Season. Promoted as The First Four Cast for First Cast, we came up short with Joan Wulff sitting out this year due to health issues. Don Trump Jr., Ed and Judy Van Put carried on with a traditional launch of their ceremonious flies into the 37 degree waters below the Beaverkill Bridge to an enthusiastic crowd just shy of 200. Judy, in Joan's absence, cast a Royal Wulff to connect with Lee, Don had something 'flymphy' and Ed had one of his secret flies with hopes of enticing Sparce's fabled two headed trout. Needless to say, all three were skunked. As onlookers sipped coffee and snacked on goodies provided by the Roscoe's B&B Association, the mingling went on long after the Three Cast came ashore for interviews, photos, and warm conversations. It should be noted that America's first family in fly fishing, the Phelan's, joined the three upstream and tried to get the fish that the three missed. It was reported that the DEC released a 27" brown trout, with a special Opening Day Gold Tag earlier that morning. If caught and the tag was turned in, the fisher would claim a million dollars in cash. As fishermen raced to their vehicles to get their fishing equipment, it was then revealed to be an April Fool's joke propagated by a prankster.
This event could not be a success without the hard work of the Roscoe, Trout Town USA, Chamber of Commerce, local merchants and community. It's all about fly fishing and those that keep it alive.
